Personal Statement

Zhang Lingyi’s practice spans photography, experimental animation, film, installation art, and experimental theatre, exploring the boundaries of human perception, technological mediation, and narrative from a multidimensional perspective. Her work focuses on power structures, the impact of technology on perceptual experience, and the interaction of art in public spaces.

Over time, Lingyi has grown wary of the dominance of “criticality” in art discourse. Where she once saw critique as essential, she now feels that relentless analysis can harden into rigidity, limiting art’s emotional and imaginative possibilities. She is instead drawn to forms that may seem absurd, fragmented, or illogical, but pulse with subconscious truth — spaces where sincerity and quiet intensity can emerge without justification.

This marks not just a shift in method, but in values. Lingyi no longer seeks to impose meaning; she aims to create conditions for multiplicity, softness, and not-knowing. She sees herself less as a commentator than as a listener and connector. Her work holds space for others — not to persuade, but to allow. For Lingyi, art is not a statement, but a shared unfolding.
